I started growing my hair in general school… I think maybe 6th grade. So a lot of time has passed since then and during this time I think I got every possible question about long hair.
And because people still ask me these questions here are 22 hair questions and my personal answers to them.
So get yourself comfortable, grab a soda, beer, popcorn, chips or whatever you like because this is going to be a long post.
Hopefully one you’ll like! So here we go…
How often do you wash your hair?
I don’t have a rule. I wash it whenever I feel it needs to be washed.
If your hair needs to be washed every 2, 3 days do that. If it needs washing once a week that’s also ok.
Pay attention to your hair and your hair needs and wash accordingly.
Is it ok to wash your hair every day?
Let’s keep it simple. I always say that we’re all different and what works for one might not work for the other so DO what works for you.
If you’re happy with your hair being washed every day and you don’t have any problems that’s totally ok.
If you’re better washing your hair every few days, once a week, every 2 weeks, etc. Do that.
But check this out… I often hear people complaining that they wash every day and by the end of the day their hair looks awful!
Here’s a little thing to keep in mind… the condition of your hair is also impacted by your overall health, your hormones, environment, stress, the products you use and the things you do.
So washing more or less won’t actually solve whatever problem your hair has if the true cause is not addressed.
What’s best for your hair cold or hot water?
It depends on how HOT it is and your hair.
From my personal experience I can tell you that really hot water might dry or damage your hair, especially if you have dry hair! It can also create dandruff and frizzy hair.
So here’s what I usually do...
I wash my hair with warm water and rinse with lukewarm water or even cool/cold if I can take it (summer time). Colder water will help retain moisture, help with frizzy hair and add shine.
Freezing cold water it’s NOT ok!
What shampoo do you use?
This is the question I get asked most of the time. Somehow, some people think that washing their hair with what I wash will get the same results. Which might not be true.
People have different hair types and what works for one might not work for the other.
I wash my hair with the classic Head & Shoulders or Dove Daily Moisture. During the years I tried other shampoos but always came back to these 2. They do the job for me.
Do you use conditioner?
Rarely.
Do you like people touching your hair?
It depends on the people. Your hair is part of you and your personal space. I don’t think it’s ok to touch someone’s hair without permission.
I was in a bus one day and felt something moving in my hair. When I turned around there was a woman with her hand in my hair. When I asked what she was doing…she said she just wanted to know if my hair was real!
A neighbour pulled my braided hair because it seemed fun to do so.
Don’t be rude. Always be respectful and ask for permission when touching someone’s hair.
Do you trim your hair every month?
No. I trim my hair whenever I feel it needs trimming. It can be once every 6 months, once a year or every 2 years depending on how it looks.
Will trimming hair make it grow faster?
No. Hair growth depends on lots of factors. Hair type, genetics, health, stress, products you’re using, etc.
Trimming will help you get rid of split ends and damaged, burned hair promoting a healthier look.
Here’s one way to look at it…
If your hair is somehow damaged it will constantly break. This will make it look like it’s not growing. Once you get rid of the damaged part, while your hair will grow healthy it might seem it grew faster.
Cutting your hair every month won’t make it grow faster.
Trim only when necessary.
What stops hair from growing?
If you notice any problems with your hair growth pay attention to what is happening in your life.
It can be stress, a hormonal imbalance, health problems, the products that you use on your hair, lack of nutrients, dehydration, etc.
Once you find out the cause and fix it your hair should get back to normal.
Do you blow dry your hair with cold or hot air?
I have 3 options on my hair dryer (cold, warm and hot) I alternate between them depending on what I need.
It’s like the question with cold and hot water. Hot air might dry and damage your hair. If you’re using hot air keep the hair dryer as far as you can from your hair.
If it’s summer or warm outside I usually let my hair air dry naturally.
Does long hair cause headaches?
Here’s my view on it… a healthy hair that is cared for with the proper length for you should not give you any pain.
If you are experiencing any pain here are a few things to keep in mind…
Long and thick hair (heavy hair) might pull too much on your scalp causing tension and pain.
Certain hairstyles can also cause pain by keeping your hair in unnatural position or pulling too much on your hair.
Using the wrong or lots of products on your hair can also add weight to your hair which will cause pain.
Remedies?
Find the right length for your hair. Get layers… it helps by making your hair lighter which will take the pressure off.
Keep your hair clean of excess products and try friendlier hairstyles that won’t pull on your hair. Also letting your hair free whenever you can helps.
Does a ponytail give you headaches?
A high or tight ponytail especially if you have really long and heavy hair can pull on your scalp and cause pain.
Will your hair fall if you keep it in a ponytail?
If the ponytail is too hard on your hair and pulls on your hair too much causing pain, in time it might cause hair fall.
Why do you always keep your hair in a braid?
I don’t always keep my hair in a braid but it’s my go-to look.
I love braids and I usually do a basic/normal or a fishtail braid. I have really long hair and it keeps hair in place when working out, gardening or doing housework.
It also helps with keeping other people’s hands off your hair!
Plus no matter how boring it seem to others I actually love it.
Do you always get compliments on your hair?
Most people are nice and respectful but there are also bad, envious, jealous people who don’t have anything better to do than to pour their negativity on you.
How do you wash your long hair?
I usually bring it forward (upside down washing). Shampoo hair, rinse.
Does upside down washing hurt your back?
If you have any neck/back problems or spend a lot of time washing… it might hurt.
What do you use to brush your hair?
I use the comb in the picture below. No brushes. Just a wide-toothed comb.
How often do you brush your hair?
No rule. Anytime I feel my hair needs it.
What type of hair do you have?
My hair is normal, thick and with natural waves.
Who cuts your hair?
I do.
I’ve never been happy with cutting my hair at a salon because so far I haven’t found anyone that would actually cut the hair how I want it.
They usually cut too much while complaining it’s too hard to cut long hair. So after a few failed attempts at the salon I watched a few YouTube videos and decided to do it myself.
It’s not the perfect haircut but I’m happy with it.
How do you keep your hair healthy?
Your hair is part of you and whatever you do reflects on your hair health. Make sure you give your hair the nutrients it needs.
The food you eat impacts your hair. Hydration is also very important so drink your water.
Use the right products for your hair and try to keep the stress away as much as you can.
